Earthquakes

Costa Rica is in a high earthquake zone.  We are right along the pacific rim.  Just this morning I experienced the biggest earthquake so far for me.  I have only felt three before this in my life, and two were here in less than a year.

I was doing laundry this morning when I felt the ground starting to shake.  Told myself, it’s just a tremor it will pass quickly.  The shaking got worse!  My husband was at the dining table and I just looked at him and said,”outside, outside.”  I didn’t even bother putting down my bottle of Downey, I just hurried outside.  The wind chime on my front porch was swaying and chiming away.  My husband made sure that I was not near the power lines also, he made me move over farther to the middle of the yard.  It only last about 15 seconds, but it felt much longer.  There we stood waiting to make sure that nothing else was coming.  So far, we haven’t felt any aftershocks today.  Then I got to thinking about my cats.  Are they OK?  I came back inside and started looking for them.  They poor little guys were hiding under the bed, just frightened.  It took them a while before they decided to come back out.

I checked the whole inside of the house while my husband checked the outside.  We haven’t seen any damage at all!  All the water lines still seem to be good also.  But we did leave our coffee cups on the dining table and found that it had sloshed the coffee out and onto the table, the cups were still sitting on the table perfectly fine.  (coffee abuse!)  The only thing that happened was that our internet went down for about 30 minutes.  Still had phone and electricity.  The magnitude was a 7.6 and only about 80 miles away from where we live.  I feel very lucky, so far there have been no reports of casualties.  My husband did say that he remembered hearing the howler monkeys calling right before we felt the quake, makes you wonder if they knew something was getting ready to happen.

  1. Glad you are all safe. Wow, it is a true adventure for you! Also, there are some interesting articles on animals and earthquakes. I know that my dogs and cats all reacted strangely, whining and acting frightened before the couple of earthquakes we’ve gone through in California and Mexico. Glad all is well! Stay safe. Guard the COFFEE!

    • The cats just looked at me first like, what the heck is that. Then when it got worse they ran to under the bed. It took them at least 10 minutes before they would poke their head out from under it. Now they are acting like it never happened, like the rest of us really.
